SOAPStone Depression

Store Front

S- The subject of this photo seems to be a store called McCollum Grocery Co. with watermelons and various food infront of it. There is also a man standing in front of the store reading the window wich has a list of prices for the food inside.

O-It looks like this photo is during the Great depression because the prices listed on the window for food are very cheap. Also there is only one man standing outside the store who seems to be wealthy because he is wearing a suit and a hat. There would be more people outside of the store if they had enough money to buy food.

A-This photo is targeted toward all audiences but it may be directed more toward adults because it is showing that being able to go to work and make money to buy food is something that some people were not able to do in the past. Therefore they should be thankful for being able to have a job.

P- The main purpose of this photo is to illustrate and inform peolple about the past. It shows that people didn't have the luxurious we have today and that we should be thankful for everything we have. We get each meal every day and we should be thankful for that.

S- What is important to this person is that every is thankful for what they have. If the artist didn't want to show that, there probably would not have been only one person standing infront of the grocery store with a suit but multiple people.

Tone- There is no real tone to this picture, but you may be able to say it is lonely because the guy is standing infront of the store all by himself with no other living organisms in the picture.

Racism at a Train Station

S- The main subject in this picture is an african american male dressed nicely with a sign above him that says "colored waiting room". Behind him is also another african american woman. To his right is a train pulling into the station.

O- Looking at this picture you can tell that it was taken in the 1950's when there was alot of racism going on.

A- This picture is intended for all adults. It may be directed more towards cocassions to show that african americans are really not that much different than other people, they dress the same, ride the train, and everything else.

P-The purpose of this picture is to inform about racism and point out to people how ridiculous racism is because in this picture it says colored waiting room, they weren't even allowed to wait for the train next to white people! I think this was too show people that it was going way too far and they were starting to make too many ruled for the smallest little things.

S- The artist that took this picture may be a white adult that was against slavery. Maybe he took this picture in attempt to help others start to notice how bad racism was. I think the artist was probably white because people probably wouldn't have listned to any african americans and there would have been no point of taking this picture.

Tone- The tone of this picture is pride. The male standing in the picture is dressed nice and he looks like he is proud to be who he is but he wants to be equal and respected by white people.

Downtown Resteraunt
S- The main subject of this photo is the outside of this resteraunt. On the right sid there is a door and above it it says "colored". Then on the opposite side of the front of the resteraunt is another door that says"white". There is a crack in the middle of the window kind of deviding the two sides. On the "white" side it says hot weiners and hamburgers priced at 5 cents and on the "colored" side it only says lunches priced at 25, 30, and 35 cents.
O- It also seems like this is during the 1950's when there was still alot of racism going on. You can tell by the two entrances and writing on the window that this was taken during racist times.
A- This picture is for all ages, gender, and race.
P-The purpose of this photo to is inform and illustrate about what America was like during the 1950's as the nation was struggling with racism. It shows how unfairly african americans were treated and showed that everything was unfair for them, all the way from drinking fountains and bathrooms, to resteraunts and buses.
S- I am not really able to tell much about the artist from this picture but one reason I think the artist may have taken this photo is so everyone would be able to reflect on how rough life was for african americans. One conclusion you may be able to make though is that the artist was white because they took the picture from the "white" side of the resteraunt.
Tone- The tone of the picture is indifferent becuase it does not really show any emotion. It is taken of a resteraunt that is not old a beaten down and it has one nicer car and one older car parked out front.

SOAPStone Depression

Feet of children on a farm

S- In the photo there are multiple people standing on a porch. It only shows them from the waist down. There are a few boards on the porch that are starting to crack. One person is wearing a long gown or dress. There is a person leaning agains a post. There are holes in his overalls and his cuffs are rolled up. Next to him on the ground is a pair of old shoes. Next to the pair of shoes is another girl wearing a dress that is stained and her legs are dirty. Then to the left of her is another girl leaning on a stick she has in her hand. She has a button up dress that also is covered in stains. Her legs are also filthy. In front of her is a bucket with what looks like a brush or something with a handle inside of it.
O- In this picture it looks like it may be during the great depression. It also looks like this may be showing slaves standing outside a house on the plantation because they are wearing raggid clothes and dont have any shoes.
A- I think this is targeted toward all ages, including males and females. People with a background of being very poor or being a slave may be able to relate to this picture and understand it better than others.
P- The purpose of this picture is to engage and show people just part of what it was like to be a slave or poor. It shows that it was miserable, you didn't have nice clothes, didn't have nice shoes, and lived in a small shack. So it is also educating us on what it was like living in slavery or poverty.
S-By looking at the photograph you can interperet that the artist may have gone through the same struggle as the people in the picture because you can see that the artist is trying to emphasize what little the people in the picture have. I think the artist thinks that is important that people see what some had to go through in the past and to show that people today should be thankful for what they have.

Tone- The tone I get from this picture is a sad and depressed feeling. It seems sad and depressing because of the clothes and the conditions these people are living in. Also by the way they are leaning and slouched instead of standing up strait makes it seem like they are unhappy and depressed.

Imagine Tomorrow

1. Did not attend the imagine tomorrow competition.

2. I am not sure how we copared to other people at the competition since I was unable to go but I also agree that more time would have been helpful. I know that before the competition the project became tiring due to the fact that we did it every day and were rushing to get things done. Overall though I think the effort we put in was worth it. I think we will be better prepared for the contest next year because now we know what the judges are looking for, we know the rubric, and we know what the other competeters are like.

3. For next years competition I would like to find a new project that would deal with designing something new instead of doing a behavioral topic such as carpooling. I am not really sure what the project would be but I would like to start a new project.

1.The only things we have left is building our trifold for our presentation, and to update and make our website better, make our final paper and make our future plan.

2.a. Out of 10 I think i would get a 9 because I have helped in our group but some people have done more than me.
b.Out of 10 I think I would get an 8 because even though there hasn't been very many things you need to be creative with, I think I could be more creative.
c.I get 10 out of 10 because when Jared tells me to do something I follow through and work on it untill it is done.
d. I think i get a 9 on problem solving because I help brainstorm solutions with the group and give good ideas.

Marketing Products
2. It really suprised me how much information they have about you just from surveys or things you have purchased. It was kind of creepy how they could estimate what was going to happen in your future and knew so much about what you liked and what you didn't. In the future I will be more carefull and conscious about what information I give about myself. I would want to keep important numbers like my social security, address, and phone number private because if that information got in the wrong hands I could get my identity stolen or robbed.

Marketing Culture
2. Marketing and logos have a huge effect on the feeling of belonging in a group or recognizing a group. Many kids at school get made fun of if they don't wear "cool" clothes or the popular brand. This is why when kids buy a popular brand of clothes they feel like they belong and are part of the group. The brands of clothes also indentify different groups. An example of this is how alot of skateboarders wear shirts with an Element or DC logo on them because they are big name skateboard companies. They feel like if they wear this clothes then they belong around other skaters and feel like one themselves. Another example of how certain logos distinguish groups is nike and adiddas. You see alot of kids that play sports wearing nike and adidas so when see someone with those logos you automatically assume they play sports.

Marketing Politics
4. I think political ads should be governed by the same kinds of laws that govern product ads because you shouldn't just be able to promise someone you will do something they want if they vote for you if you know it will not be possible. After a while if the people running for a political position don't ever fulfill what they said they would people will stop listining to them and then that tactic would become useless. The reason why I think there are not such laws is because if the person becomes president or governor they may be able to change things to ensure that what they promised will actually happen.

This is a Propaganda by Disneyland that I found on the internet trying to convince the audience to come visit Disneyland. It is directed toward all ages but mainly toward families. It appeals to the audience by pathos. It shows a family all laughing and having a great time, with a bright and sunny background to make you feel happy. This not only attracts younger kids with the line,"Where dreams come true" but also parents because they want to be able to have a fun time with their kids like the parents in the advertisement are. The line "where dreams come true" is appealing to little kids because all little kids have dreams that they desperatly want to come true and they think if they go to disneyland their dreams will come true and they will be happy since the little girl in the ad is smiling and having a good time.

This is a propaganda that I found on the internet that is a magazine ad by the famouse car company, Porsche. This ad is directed toward people who can drive. This ad is using a powerful image of a brand new shiny Porsche with the light glistening off it to attract the reader. Everyone wishes that they could have a nice car like this but only few are able to buy one. This also leads to the ad appealing to the audiences wants and needs, not only for a nice car but the speeds it can acomplish with such an amazing look. The light shining off the car appeals to the audiences wants by giving them a sleek, cool looking car. It also appeals to their need for speed with the quote at the top of the ad, "It's about as fast as you can go without having to eat airline food" which portrays an image in their mind of them going extremely fast with the comfort of being in their own car instead of a hot, stuffy, crowded airplane.

This is an advertisement that is on the internet by Apple trying to persuade all ages to by an ipod. It shows a girl dancing and having a good time with her ipod in her hand and then above her it says, "Join the digital music revolution." This is a form of pathos because this saying is making you feel like an outcast and loser if you dont have an ipod. Nobody wants to be left out so they are going to go buy an ipod or digital music player so they will have the "in" thing and feel like part of the crowd.

This is an add I saw on the internet by adidas. This advertisement is trying to persuade athletes to buy their products. It is using multiple tactics to attract the customer. It uses ethos by showing Gilbert Arenas, who plays in the NBA, to make kids that play basketball that idolize him or want to make it to the NBA think that they will if they use Adidas products. Then it also uses the tactic Slogan with the companys catch phrase, "impossible is nothing." You could also consider this ad using emotionally loaded words such as impossible, and the phrase zero to hero. All of these elements combine to make this a convincing ad that makes the reader think that they can do anything they want to using adidas gear just like Gilbert who went from nobody to one of the best players in the NBA.
This is an advertisment I found on the internet by the cigarette company, Kool, that is directed toward any one over the age of 18 that smokes. This picture shows a man holding a pack of Kool cigarettes in his hand and a woman checking him out. This makes people think that if they smoke these cigarettes they will be considered cool and will help make people think they are attractive. Many people want to be thought of as good looking and cool so it also makes them think that this product will appeal to their wants and needs. This add is a great illustration of a company using pathos to try and persuade you to buy their product.

This is a magazine ad by Gatorade trying to persuade you to buy their product to "quench your thirst." They are trying to attract or apeal to the desires of athletes of different ages. This ad uses many tactics to attract you. One main one it uses is ethos when it says, "it takes something special inside to be like Mike." This is ethos because it is using Michael Jordan, a famous basketball player, to make people want to drink Gatorade so they can be good just like him. They use this tactic for this audience becasue they know that all athletes want to be great and be the best.

Beasts of England

D iction: When I read the speech and looked at the word choice I noticed that it repeated beast multiple times. The words that stood out to me the most though were tyrant, hearken, and toil.
I magry: This speech makes you picture a good, happy, wonderful future. Some of the phrases and words that show this are joyful tidings, golden future, sweeter, and bright will shine.
D etails: It didn't really get very discriptive but it described the environment and some actions. Examples: Cruel whips crack no more. Spur rust forever, golden future, bright will shine the fields, and sweeter will blow the breezes.
L anguage: Words were used to show a bright, happy future but there weren't many long complex word. Some words used to depict a bright, happy future were, bright, purer, sweeter, joyful, golden, and riches.
S entence structure: Each tiny section or paragraph was either a compound - complex or compound sentence. Some of the speech rhymed, such as when it said, "And the harness from our back, Cruel whips no more shall crack."
Overall the tone of this speech was a happy, joyful, and bright future.
