SOAPStone Depression

Feet of children on a farm

S- In the photo there are multiple people standing on a porch. It only shows them from the waist down. There are a few boards on the porch that are starting to crack. One person is wearing a long gown or dress. There is a person leaning agains a post. There are holes in his overalls and his cuffs are rolled up. Next to him on the ground is a pair of old shoes. Next to the pair of shoes is another girl wearing a dress that is stained and her legs are dirty. Then to the left of her is another girl leaning on a stick she has in her hand. She has a button up dress that also is covered in stains. Her legs are also filthy. In front of her is a bucket with what looks like a brush or something with a handle inside of it.
O- In this picture it looks like it may be during the great depression. It also looks like this may be showing slaves standing outside a house on the plantation because they are wearing raggid clothes and dont have any shoes.
A- I think this is targeted toward all ages, including males and females. People with a background of being very poor or being a slave may be able to relate to this picture and understand it better than others.
P- The purpose of this picture is to engage and show people just part of what it was like to be a slave or poor. It shows that it was miserable, you didn't have nice clothes, didn't have nice shoes, and lived in a small shack. So it is also educating us on what it was like living in slavery or poverty.
S-By looking at the photograph you can interperet that the artist may have gone through the same struggle as the people in the picture because you can see that the artist is trying to emphasize what little the people in the picture have. I think the artist thinks that is important that people see what some had to go through in the past and to show that people today should be thankful for what they have.

Tone- The tone I get from this picture is a sad and depressed feeling. It seems sad and depressing because of the clothes and the conditions these people are living in. Also by the way they are leaning and slouched instead of standing up strait makes it seem like they are unhappy and depressed.
